Bilit Adventure Lodge (BAL) is a nature and wildlife lodge located at Kampung Bilit along the magnificent Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

Here, the river is more than a waterway. It is the lifeblood of an extraordinary ecosystem, a source of livelihood for local communities and a gateway into one of Borneo's most remarkable wildlife destinations.

The Kinabatangan River is renowned for its exceptional concentration of wildlife and biodiversity. Along its waterways and surrounding forests, visitors have the opportunity to encounter some of Borneo's most iconic species, including Bornean orangutans, proboscis monkeys, Bornean pygmy elephants, Rhinoceros Hornbills, crocodiles and countless species of birds, reptiles and other rainforest wildlife.

For those who come to Bilit Adventure Lodge, the experience is not simply about seeing wildlife.

It is about being surrounded by nature, waking to the sounds of the rainforest, cruising quietly along the river at sunrise, watching wildlife in its natural habitat, meeting the people who call Bilit home and discovering that tourism can create a positive impact on the very place we have come to experience.

OUR STORY

From Six Simple Rooms to a Sustainable Wildlife Lodge

Bilit Adventure Lodge began with a humble vision.

The lodge was established in 2002 with just six very basic rooms.

At that time, Bilit was a very different place.

There was no government electricity grid serving the lodge. BAL operated solely on a single generator, which was switched on from approximately 6.00 pm to 10.00 pm every day.

There was no expectation of having electricity throughout the day.

Guests came for one reason:

to experience the Kinabatangan and its wildlife.

The lodge's beginnings were humble, but the vision was ambitious — to create a place where travellers could experience the incredible natural environment of the Kinabatangan while creating opportunities for the local community.

And when BAL first started, we did not even have our own boats.

We hired boats from the villagers.

This was how our river adventure began.

The local community was therefore part of BAL's story from the very beginning.

As the lodge grew and tourism developed, so did our operations. What began with hired village boats eventually evolved into our own fleet.

Today, BAL operates eight boats for our guests.

From six basic rooms and hired boats, Bilit Adventure Lodge has grown into a 40-room wildlife lodge, comprising:

THE PEOPLE BEHIND BAL

A Family Journey in Sabah Tourism

Bilit Adventure Lodge was founded by Datuk John Lim in 2002.

The Lim family has been involved in Sabah tourism for decades, with a strong connection to nature-based tourism and hospitality.

The family has operated Sepilok Jungle Resort in Sepilok since 1995, creating a foundation of experience in welcoming travellers to Sabah's wildlife destinations.

John Lim's son, Mr. Johnny Lim, completed his secondary education in Sandakan before pursuing his degree at Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia, graduating in 2001.

After returning to Sandakan, Johnny joined the family business and helped with the operations of Sepilok Jungle Resort.

However, he wanted to understand Sabah's nature and wildlife more deeply.

He therefore undertook training as a nature tourist guide and became a certified licensed nature guide.

That experience changed the direction of his career.

Instead of simply providing accommodation, Johnny began incorporating nature and wildlife tour packages into the resort's offerings and personally guiding tours.

He discovered that there was an enormous opportunity to introduce visitors to Sabah not merely as a holiday destination, but as a place where people could experience wildlife, rainforest, culture and adventure.

FROM GUIDING TO INBOUND TOURISM

In 2006, Johnny took another major step.

He established Sepilok Tropical Wildlife Adventure Sdn Bhd, an inbound tour company specialising in wildlife, nature and soft adventure tourism in Sabah and Borneo.

The company has continued to grow over the years, developing its own vehicles, boats, guides and tourism products.

Bilit Adventure Lodge was subsequently incorporated into the company's operations, bringing together:

Accommodation + Transportation + Boats + Guides + Wildlife Experiences + Community

This integration has allowed Johnny to manage both the inbound tourism business and Bilit Adventure Lodge as part of a connected tourism operation.

Today, Johnny continues to oversee the development of BAL with a clear objective:

To grow the business sustainably without losing the soul of the place that made the business possible.

Meanwhile, Mr. John Lim and the rest of the family continue to operate and manage Sepilok Jungle Resort, which has been part of the family's tourism journey since 1995.

The story of BAL is therefore not simply a business story.

It is a family tourism story spanning generations, destinations and decades of experience in Sabah.

A LODGE BUILT AROUND THE RIVER

The Kinabatangan River provides the natural stage for the BAL experience.

Every day, the river changes.

The morning can begin with mist floating above the water and the sounds of birds calling from the forest. As the sun rises, the river becomes alive with movement. Proboscis monkeys leap between branches, macaques forage along the riverbanks and eagles and hornbills move through the forest canopy.

On fortunate days, visitors may encounter the magnificent Bornean pygmy elephant moving along the riverbank or crossing through the surrounding forest.

As evening approaches, the character of the river changes again. The golden light of sunset gives way to darkness, and a completely different world emerges during a night walk.

This is the magic of the Kinabatangan.

You never quite know what the river is going to show you.

And that uncertainty is part of the adventure.

The Kinabatangan is particularly famous for the opportunity to encounter the Borneo Big 5.

At BAL, these five iconic animals are:

One of Borneo's most iconic wildlife species and a powerful symbol of the island's ancient rainforest.

???? Proboscis Monkey

With its unmistakable large nose, distinctive appearance and fascinating social behaviour, the proboscis monkey is one of Borneo's most recognisable endemic species.

???? Bornean Pygmy Elephant

One of the most unforgettable encounters on the Kinabatangan is seeing a herd of Bornean pygmy elephants along the riverbank or moving through the surrounding landscape.

???? Rhinoceros Hornbill

The magnificent Rhinoceros Hornbill is one of Borneo's most spectacular birds.

With its enormous casque, powerful bill and striking appearance, seeing one flying across the river or perched high in the rainforest canopy can be a breathtaking experience.

The Rhinoceros Hornbill is also an important symbol of the health and richness of the rainforest ecosystem.

The Kinabatangan is also home to crocodiles, an important reminder that this remains a genuine wild river ecosystem.

THE BAL EXPERIENCE

A typical stay at BAL can begin before sunrise.

You wake early.

The river is quiet.

The air is cool.

You board one of our boats and slowly move along the Kinabatangan.

As the sun rises, the forest begins to wake.

Birds begin calling.

Monkeys become active.

The mist slowly disappears from the river.

And for a moment, you realise why this place needs to be protected.

Later in the day, you can relax at the lodge, enjoy local food, meet other travellers, participate in a cultural or community activity, or simply sit back and enjoy the surroundings.

And when darkness arrives, you can discover another side of the Kinabatangan through a night walk or other evening experience.

This is not a holiday where everything happens inside a hotel.

Our restaurant and dining area is called Jom Mangan, a local Sabahan (river people) expression.

Jom means "Let's Go".

The name reflects the relaxed, friendly spirit of Sabah.

Food at BAL is not simply about eating.

It is about gathering.

It is about sharing stories after a morning wildlife cruise.

It is about talking about the elephant you saw, the orangutan that disappeared into the trees or the Rhinoceros Hornbill that suddenly flew across the river.

Our ingredients are purchased locally and fresh from local suppliers wherever possible, allowing our guests' meals to contribute to the local economy.

Welcome to Aramaiti Bar.

Aramaiti is a Sabahan expression meaning "Cheers!"

There is even a little local tradition behind the word.

If you can confidently raise your drink and say:

"ARAMAITI!"

during a drinking session in Sabah, you may just be seen as a local!

At Aramaiti Bar, guests can relax, meet fellow travellers and share stories from the day's adventures.

Perhaps someone saw an orangutan.

Someone else saw elephants.

EIGHT BOATS, ONE RIVER, COUNTLESS STORIES

When BAL first started, we had no boats of our own.

Our river activities depended on boats hired from the villagers.

This was an important part of our early relationship with the community and provided income opportunities for local boat owners and boatmen.

As BAL developed, we gradually invested in our own boats.

Today, we operate eight boats.

Our boats are not simply transportation.

They are our gateway to the ecosystem.

Every river cruise is different.

One cruise may reveal a family of proboscis monkeys.

Another may produce a Rhinoceros Hornbill flying across the river.

Another may reveal elephants.

And sometimes, you may see nothing spectacular at all.

But even then, you have experienced something important:

a wild river that still belongs to nature.

One of the strongest philosophies behind Bilit Adventure Lodge is our commitment to the local community.

We believe tourism should not simply bring visitors into a destination and take resources out.

From boat operations and housekeeping to food and beverage, laundry, cultural activities, nature activities and equipment rentals, we deliberately create opportunities for different departments and local people to participate in the tourism economy.

In addition to river cruises, our boatmen's department is involved in activities such as:

Night Walks

Guests can explore the surroundings after dark and discover a different side of the rainforest.

The activity creates an additional income opportunity for local staff while encouraging visitors to appreciate the biodiversity that exists beyond the daytime river cruise.

Tree Planting

Guests can participate in tree-planting activities and contribute directly towards restoring and strengthening the natural environment.

For every tree planted, visitors are not simply purchasing an activity.

They are contributing towards a greener Kinabatangan and creating an additional source of income for the local community.

Our housekeeping department also participates in the lodge's community-based income model.

A Major Milestone for Bilit Adventure Lodge

On 31 August 2026, Bilit Adventure Lodge achieved certification under the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) framework, making BAL the first lodge in the Kinabatangan area to achieve this recognition.

This is an achievement we are extremely proud of.

But more importantly, it represents something much bigger than a certificate hanging on a wall.

What is GSTC?

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) establishes and manages global standards for sustainable tourism, known as the GSTC Criteria.

These criteria provide a framework for tourism businesses and destinations to demonstrate responsible practices across important areas including:

• Sustainable management
• Socio-economic impacts
• Cultural impacts
• Environmental impacts
• Resource management
• Waste reduction
• Conservation
• Community engagement
• Protection of local culture
• Benefits to local communities

GSTC recognition therefore gives travellers, tourism partners and the industry an internationally recognised reference point for evaluating sustainability practices.

For BAL, achieving GSTC certification is an honour because it validates our long-term commitment to sustainability and provides an external benchmark for our practices.

But we do not see certification as the finish line.

It is the beginning of a higher standard.

We want BAL to continue improving year after year.

???? TECHNOLOGY DETOX

We Were Late to Wi-Fi — And We Are Proud of It

Interestingly, BAL was one of the last lodges in the area to introduce Wi-Fi.

And we did that deliberately.

We believe the Kinabatangan is one of the few places left where people should be able to put down their phones, look up from their screens and reconnect with nature.

Imagine sitting beside the river without constantly checking notifications.

Listen to the birds.

Watch the monkeys.

Feel the breeze.

Look at the stars.

Talk to the people sitting beside you.

This is the experience we want our guests to have.

But we also understand today's travellers.

Guests may need to:

• Contact their families
• Check important messages
• Work remotely
• Attend online meetings

• Make important arrangements

So we listened to our guests.

We eventually installed Wi-Fi — but with a BAL philosophy.

Wi-Fi is available in the dining area – Jom Mangan.

There is no Wi-Fi in the guest rooms.

Why?

Because we want guests to come out of their rooms.

We want the dining area to become a place where people meet, talk and connect.

And most importantly:

We don't want our guests to travel all the way to the Kinabatangan River only to spend the evening inside their room looking at a screen.

Technology has its place.

But here at BAL, nature comes first.

? ENERGY – LIFE IN THE JUNGLE

Electricity at BAL is now supplied by the government power grid.

However, anyone who has spent time in the jungle knows that things do not always go according to plan.

Power interruptions can occur.

Therefore, BAL has two standby generators to ensure that essential operations can continue when the electricity supply is interrupted.

If the lights suddenly go off, don't panic.

Please stay calm and give us approximately 10 seconds.

Our generator system will automatically start and restore essential electricity.

It is simply part of life in the jungle.

And perhaps, for a moment, the darkness is not such a bad thing.

Because when the lights go out, you may suddenly discover something else:

the rainforest has its own lights and sounds.

???? OUR WATER – PRECIOUS IN THE RAINFOREST

Water is one of our most important resources.

BAL has developed its own water filtration system, which was also the first such system in the area.

The filtration system is used specifically for laundry and cleaning purposes.

It is not intended for drinking.

For drinking water, BAL transports water from Sandakan to the lodge, where it is made available to guests through our centralised drinking-water station.

Rather than depending on single-use bottled drinking water, we encourage guests to refill their reusable bottles.

????? RAINWATER HARVESTING

Sabah receives abundant rainfall, and BAL seeks to make better use of this natural resource.

We have a rainwater collection tank, with collected rainwater used for appropriate purposes including laundry services.

This reduces the demand for treated water for activities where drinking-quality water is unnecessary.

Every drop that we can responsibly capture and reuse is another drop that does not need to come from other sources.

???? HELP US SAVE WATER

We ask our guests to become part of our sustainability efforts.

Small actions become significant when thousands of guests participate.

During your stay, we encourage you to:

Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.

Close the tap while soaping during your shower.

Avoid unnecessary water usage.

The goal is not to make your stay uncomfortable.

It is to remind ourselves that water is a valuable resource, even in one of the wettest environments on Earth.

???? HELP US SAVE ELECTRICITY

We also ask guests to help us reduce unnecessary electricity consumption.

When leaving your room:

Please switch off the lights.

Please switch off the air-conditioning.

Please switch off the fan.

There is no reason for an empty room to consume electricity.

It may seem like a small action.

But when multiplied across thousands of guest nights each year, the savings become significant.

Guests are encouraged to complete five simple actions:

? Turn off the tap while brushing
? Take a shorter shower
? Reuse my towel
? Switch off lights when leaving
? Switch off air-conditioning and fan before going out

A Simple Decision With a Big Impact

At BAL, we do not sell conventional single-use mineral water bottles.

Instead, we provide a centralised drinking-water station where guests can refill their reusable bottles.

This decision is part of our commitment to reducing plastic waste.

Rather than:

Buy ? Drink ? Throw Away

we encourage:

Refill ? Reuse ? Reduce

Guests can therefore enjoy drinking water while helping us reduce the amount of plastic entering the waste stream.

It is a small change.

But sustainability is often made up of thousands of small changes.
